How much does window replacement cost in 2026? – Price guide
Updated October 2026
New windows cut heat loss, reduce draughts and lift the look of a house. Here we cover typical costs, what drives the price, when you need permission and common pitfalls.
Läs på svenskaWhat does window replacement cost?
Our calculator uses a Swedish baseline of about SEK 8,000 per square metre of window area excluding VAT, including installation, at the Standard level. It is converted for the country you choose.
A typical detached house has 15–20 m² of windows. Simple units cost less; custom sizes, glazing bars, aluminium cladding or large glazed doors push the price up.
Labour rates and rules differ a lot between countries, so always compare against local quotes.
What drives the cost?
Frame material: timber, timber/aluminium and uPVC differ in price, maintenance and lifespan.
Energy performance: modern triple glazing reaches U-values around 0.8–1.1, compared with 2.5–3.0 for old double glazing.
Size and number: many small windows cost more per square metre than a few large ones.
Installation and finishing: new reveals, trims, sills, flashing and sealing are not always included.
Access: upper-floor windows may need scaffolding or a lift.
Do you need permission?
Replacing windows like-for-like usually needs no planning permission, but building regulations on energy and safety still apply.
Changing the look of the facade – different divisions, colour, material or new openings – may require permission, especially for listed buildings or conservation areas.
In apartment buildings the housing association or freeholder must usually approve.
Common pitfalls
Comparing quotes where reveals, flashing or removal of old windows are missing from some.
Choosing a poor U-value – cheaper windows can cost more in heating over time.
Ignoring rot in frames and walls. Keep a 10–15% contingency for surprises.
