Basic standard (about 5 m², standard tiles and fittings): often around EUR 10,000–14,000 in Western Europe.
Normal standard with better materials: often around EUR 14,000–20,000.
High-end bathroom with premium tiles, underfloor heating and designer fittings: often EUR 22,000 and up.
Costs differ greatly between countries – labour in Scandinavia, Germany or the US costs far more than in Southern Europe or South-East Asia.
What drives the cost?
Demolition and waterproofing: a proper, certified waterproofing membrane is essential and takes several days.
Plumbing: moving the drain, toilet or shower quickly adds cost.
Materials: tiles, vanity units and taps can differ by thousands of euros.
Ventilation and electrics: new extractor fan, underfloor heating and lighting are often extra.
Permits and contractors
A bathroom renovation rarely needs a building permit, but apartments often need approval from the housing association.
Use qualified wet-room contractors so your insurance stays valid. Some countries offer tax relief on labour – check local rules.
Common pitfalls
Discovering water damage only during demolition – keep a 10–15% contingency.
Comparing quotes that do not cover the same scope, such as fittings or waterproofing certificates.
Forgetting you may be without a bathroom for several weeks.
